DHI Water & Environment has been appointed by the Yangtze Water Resources Commission to set up an inflow forecasting system for the Three Gorges Reservoir.
The dam has ten 700 MW hydropower units operating now, and another 16 units will be completed within the next two years. Excess flow is released through some or all of the 67 gates, which are located at different levels in the dam.

The forecasts will be applied to operate these gates and other structures in order to optimize the power production and at the same time ensuring sufficient storage to control river water levels downstream and avoid flooding there.
The forecasting system will be established using MIKE FLOOD WATCH, which automatically collects real-time data, performs forecast calculations using MIKE 11, and issues forecasts every 15 minutes.
‘We are exited about implementing MIKE FLOOD WATCH for this challenging project. MIKE FLOOD WATCH is now well established in China with very good results from real-time applications on some of the river systems throughout China’ says Qian-Ming Lu, Managing Director of DHI Water & Environment in China.
